Liver Anatomy and Anatomic Variants 1 3

چکیده
From the first liver resection by A. Luis in 1886 to modern day liver transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery has witnessed major advancements over the last century. Much of this technical achievement has been attained on the back of progressively improved understanding of the liver anatomy and its potential variant. From Cantlie to Couinaud, many anatomists contributed towards this modern-day understanding of the liver anatomy. The liver, by virtue of its friability and propensity to bleed from rich vascularization, continues to be a surgical challenge for today’s surgeon despite access to modern instruments and equipment. Good working knowledge of the hepatic anatomy with its variants is therefore an important prerequisite to successful hepatobiliary surgery and the only way to minimize associated complications. This chapter reviews the anatomy of the liver in some detail. All functional components of the liver, including arterial supply, venous outflow, biliary tree and lymphatics, are sequentially reviewed.

Evaluation of the donor liver for living donor liver transplantation.
Key Points 1. Accurate assessment of the donor liver is an important component of the living donor liver evaluation and is critical to ensure a successful outcome for both donor and recipient. 2. Liver biochemistry tests, viral hepatitis serological tests, tests to exclude chronic liver disease, and volumetric computed tomographic or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the liver are performed ro...
متن کاملThe Unusual Localization of Right Hepatic Artery Multiple Anatomic Variants in Celiac Axis
The extrahepatic vascular and biliary anatomy of Calot’s triangle is well known to be highly variable and this provides a surgical challenge. The liver has a dual blood supply consisting of the portal vein and the hepatic artery. The hepatic artery which delivers 25% of the blood supply, arises from the celiac trunk. The celiac trunk gives off the left gastric, splenic and common hepatic arteri...
متن کاملA Study of the Anatomic Variations in Extrahepatic Bile Ducts in 50 Adults Referred to Kerman Forensic Medicine Organization
Anatomic variations in forensic extrahepatic bile ducts is common. Knowledge of extrahepatic bile duct variations is important for surgeons in order to prevent iatrogenic damage during surgery. This study aims to determine the variations in extrahepatic bile ducts among 150 cadavers located at the Kerman Medicine Organization. We performed autopsies on 150 cadavers. Bile ducts were exposed an...
متن کاملVascular liver anatomy and main variants: what the radiologist must know.
Advances in surgical techniques are extremely demanding regarding the accuracy and level of detail expected for display of the vascular anatomy of the liver. Precise knowledge of the arterial, portal and hepatic vein territories are mandatory whenever a liver intervention is planned. Sectional anatomy can now be routinely performed on multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) with volumetric dat...
